Living Hope Community Centre
A faith based non-profit NGO with a Section 18A tax exemption certificate. Started in 1999, our project aims to assist the Deep South of Cape Town as it faces the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Objectives:
To spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in a life changing way and to encourage people to follow Christ. To play a vital role in the prevention, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS. To undertake community development through educational and health related programmes

Volunteer Opportunities Include:
One month stay volunteers will be involved in a variety of the following activities:
- Preparing Daily Lunch at a Homeless Centre. This will involve the cooking and preparation of lunch for +/- 70 Homeless People. Preparation starts at 8.30 am and ends after lunch clean up at 1.00pm.
- Children’s Arts: Living Hope presently runs children’s clubs in two disadvantaged communities, as well as working with the street children in Muizenberg, here we would like volunteers gifted with different artistic talents to teach the children, dance, drama, crafts and painting. This is an afternoon activity.
- Special Events. During the June/July and December/January holidays Living Hope offers children’s holiday clubs, volunteers will assist with various activities during this time.
- Teaching on health Issues: This opportunity is open to those who have had a medical background. South African law prevents those who were trained in other countries from practicing within South Africa without being licensed; however we value their knowledge and input, and would love to use that in further developing both our staff and clients through education and development. This can be a full day activity or combined with another.
- Soccer Player/Teacher. Skilled soccer players are needed to coach the homeless and street children in soccer. This activity takes place in the afternoons and weekends.
- Teaching Crafts and Skills Development to Homeless. The Muizenberg centre offers skills training and job creation workshops, students would be able to assist in facilitating these workshops. The workshops take place from 8:30am -12:00pm.
- Assist with Children’s Clubs. Assist our Life skills educators in running clubs in the two disadvantaged areas, in the afternoons from 2:00pm-5:00pm. We are also hoping to begin homework classes, in a third area where we assist children with their homework.
The Team House and ACTS
History
The Teamhouse was set up by the Johnson Family during 2004 which also happened to be their first year in full-time ministry. They came to South Africa in support of King of Kings Baptist Centre and the associated Living Hope Community Centres.
They found and secured a long-term lease on the home from a fellow church member as their personal residence with the idea of hosting visiting missionary teams from America and around the world coming to do missions work in Cape Town or having Cape Town as one of the team’s stops on the way to or from other parts of Africa. This is a home full of the Love of Christ and run on Christian values and principles.
On the Johnson family’s return to the States, they partnered with ACTS – African Christian Tours and Safaris who facilitate mission work offering logistical support throughout Africa with offices in Zimbabwe, Kenya and at the Team House. This partnership takes care of all the logistics of short term mission teams coming to Living Hope. There are currently around 10-12 teams that come per year!
Fish Hoek Baptist Church FHBC (King of Kings)
Living Hope was born out of the vision of FHBC and there are many areas of local church involvement here:
- Media, this is done in partnership with CCFm and RAN. (www.ccfm.org.za, www.kingofkings.org.za/ran)
- Youth Ministry, which involves facilitating Friday Night Youth and Wednesday Evening Small Groups.
- Counseling. This service is offered in partnership with the Fish Hoek Drug Crisis Centre and allows volunteers to gain training in counseling skills.
- Personal development training courses will be completed by each volunteer with assistance and reflection times as a group and during mentoring time with the Volunteer Coordinator.
